Fun Filler Facts

I read an interesting fact the other day…. Women lose volume in their face equivalent of one syringe of filler EACH year after the age of 20.  What does that mean?  That by the time you are 40, you potentially could have lost 20 milliliters of volume, or 20 syringes of filler.

REALLY?

Now… this is not true for everyone.  We all see those women who look like the years simply just don’t affect them. What you may not know is that many women start early with preventative measures to combat aging.  Laser and radiofrequency procedures can help eliminate sun and age spots, decrease pore size, and keep the skin layers thick.  These procedures help to stimulate your body to continue to make its own collagen… something we all desperately want!  But that is a topic for another day…

Dermal fillers… how do you know what type of filler you need?

There are hyaluronic acid fillers, and collagen-stimulating fillers.  Fillers differ due to the additives that are put in them, how readily your body can break them down, and the flexibility of the dermal filler.  Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in everyone’s body.  The FDA approved hyaluronic acid fillers in 2003.  Several recent studies have found that repeated injections of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers may actually stimulate the body to make its own collagen again! These types of fillers typically last anywhere from 3 months to several years.  Collagen dermal fillers are those that stimulate your body to produce more collagen, such as Radiesse and Sculptra.  These fillers do not completely break down in the body.

A few other fun facts about dermal fillers…

Dermal fillers were first used in the late 1800’s.  A physician experimented with injecting a petroleum-based substance into the skin to create volume. This practice lasted through the 1920’s.

It takes A LOT to over-do dermal fillers.  Some prominent dermatologists surmise that it takes TEN or MORE syringes of filler to get that over-done look.  A good rule of thumb is one syringe for every decade of life lived.  For example,… 3 syringes in your 30’s, and 4 syringes in your 40’s, 5 syringes in your 50’s… and so on.

Fillers coupled with Botox can increase the longevity of each product, while turning back the hands of time.

Fillers are not just for the face!  They are FDA approved to help give volume back to wrinkly hands and withering earlobes.
